I Love You Man…
I am excited about this Sunday! It’s the third week of our “At the Movies” series and our movie of choice is “I Love you Man”.
The movie deals with a guy who is about to get married and discovers that he doesn’t have any real guy friends. He realizes that he won’t have a best man unless he does something about it.
I know in my life many of my close relationships have had “cost me something” at one time or another. Because I valued the relationship – I was willing to pay the costs. How many times in our life do we try to “get a discount” on our relationships? I’m not sure any relationship worth having comes with no cost attached. We want good friends but we don’t have the time to listen, we avoid conflict, we are selfish…..we put our self in the center rather than the one we say we care about.
I can’t wait to dig in and get God’s perspective on how we do relationships. Tomorrow is going to be awesome!

Check this Out!

A Life Giving Church

Ever have a day where something “hits you out of the blue”?
Today was my day. I had 4 conversations with different people all in the market for a new Home church. Each conversation was different and unique, but there seemed to be a thread that carried through each one.
In no certain terms each person I talked with today shared with me that they are looking for a church that’s “LIFE-GIVING”.
What I re-discovered is people want to encounter God without the religious baggage that they find when they go to church.
Craig Groeschel in his Book “IT” describes the 5 things that make a church LIFE GIVING – or in his terms – churches that have “IT”. I Love these things – I’m praying for these things and excited to be apart of a church that HAS these things…….
1. Passion for God’s presence
2. A deep craving to reach the Lost
3. Spirit-filled Faith
4. Down to earth humility
5. Brokenness
“The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of. Our attention would have been on God.” -CS Lewis

Thoughts from Sunday (and Monday)…
What a GREAT Monday!
What constitutes a great Monday? Good Question. For most people it’s back to work and back to a scheduled work week. In ministry it’s a lot different. For my family it’s “my day off” and I try and put the phone down (but I must admit – I still check my e-mail / texts often) and just relax with my family. So I thought today I would give you a little insight into two parts of my world – the Sunday highlights and the Monday decompress….this week they both winners!
Here we go…..let’s start with Sunday!
- Loving our new Facility for THRIVE! Had many comments about how sharp the building is…and I agree!
- Realizing that God loves BIG CHURCH and SMALL CHURCH – and if we are going to be a healthy church – we need to be both!
- Laughing out loud at “the office” clip that we showed Michael hitting his employee with his car – could there be a funnier thought?
- Our Set Up and Production team knocked it out of the park again…..they never cease to amaze me. Ryan you’re my Hero man!
- Hearing all the snickering during the service – showed a funny video on what a Growth Group should NOT Look like.
- Walking through THRIVE KIDZ and seeing the great Vibe that they have – even the hallways make you feel like a kid – Chucky Cheese eat your heart out!
- Getting to know Patrick and Patricia – a new couple that visited and found out about Thrive by googling us….
- Seeing over half our church sign up for GROWTH GROUPS on our first week of sign up! Friendships and Life Change always follow true community – sign up!
- Spontaneously sitting down with our Dream Team leaders and hearing what they thought of the day – great insight – reminded again how sharp our team is.
Monday Decompress….
- Sleeping in!
- Cuddling with my 4 month old boy – Cole Elmore…I swear we were having a conversation -he is a stud!!!!
- Went to see the movie – “The Informant” with my wife… 2 out of 4 stars – another case of the trailer being the funniest stuff – rent it!
- Enjoyed walking around Sams Club and Furniture stores with Jackie – my wife’s love language is quality time.
- Read some in the book “Pop Church” – can we leverage culture without it compromising the gospel – I say YES!
- And in the words of the “Truman Show” how does it all end…..MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL!
Feed your Faith – starve your doubts!

Thoughts from Sunday

Michael Vick showed up at THRIVE Sunday…..well kind of.
We are smack dab in the middle of a series titled – The Life You were Meant to Live. Our theme for the day was “making it right” and who better to talk about than a guy that admitted to killing dogs, lost 11 million dollars and had every tiny detail of his life thrown up on ESPN for all of us to watch every 36 seconds? It was incredible to watch the room as we showed part of his interview from 60 minutes. Everyone’s eyes were plastered to the screen. Why?
I think it’s because we as humans LOVE a COMEBACK STORY. Now I realize that Vick is still a “work in process” and some of you are holding out your verdict on him (especially if you are Eagle fans). But the reality is….who isn’t a work in progress? I get up every morning thanking God for the crazy grace that pours out on my life…..I might add – grace I don’t deserve…..and that’s why all our lives are “comeback stories” being written.
Here are my walk away thoughts from Sunday’s service….
- We made the Big announcement that THRIVE is MOVING! This Sunday is our last weekend at Rylander. We move Sept 13th to Westlake Prep Academy off Bellaire Rd (behind Walmart / Best Buy on 99). Killer building – come visit and check it out.
- Playing Drums in the THRIVE band today was really fun- thanks Jerod / Justin for letting me rock out one more time….
- It was actually exciting watching our “arm chair quarterbacks” try and win free ice cream bars for their half of the room – people get really serious over ice cream (and the NFL -but we all knew that…)
- Watching all the summer crowd show-up on one day left me with a good feeling. Can’t wait to meet all the new people God is going to bring to Thrive this fall.
- Sharing with everyone that in order to live the life of our dreams we have to ask the right questions. And ask God for the courage to live everyday like it might be our last…here’s the questions.
- What Relationships do I have to INITIATE?
- What Relationships have to be NUTURED?
- What Relationships have to be RESTORED?
- We had new Dream TEAM members all over the place – it seemed like I talked with a bunch of people that were launching into their serving team -good stuff.
- Kinda excited about how many people I talked with that are playing Softball next week. Wednesday night double headers here we come!!!
I just got this twitter today -”You never know God is all you need, until God is all you have”!
The best is yet to come,
Tom
Read this Book…

Our guys group gets together every Friday morning. When we started it, we initially wanted a place for “guys to come together” and be real. Well it worked and we decided our next step was to conquer something. We thought about hunting and realized a few of our members might accidentally shoot us, so we settled on a book! With our incredible desire to take something down, we chose to take on the book “FIGHT” by Kenny Luck. WOW – This book has kicked me in the teeth and re-opened my eyes to some BIG TIME realities. I don’t want to give it all away but it talks about the REAL battle going on RIGHT NOW with evil and good. Here are a few thoughts that I hope make you order it on AMAZON right now. If you are woman reading this – buy it for your guy. It’s actually a book that guys will want to read….
- To discern evil you must understand that Satan is a living personality with a complex depth of character.
- Satan has an unhealthy fondness for the power of his position that turned him self-serving. God sensed it and responded in a manner consistent with his character banishing him from heaven.
- Jesus knew that innocence to evil and sin was the secret to clarity of mind and receptivity to His Spirit in battle.
- One of the reasons that we are getting massacred is that we are sheep among wolves, but we act like we are sheep among squirrels.
- Bono – (in reference to the church) “today it’s a load of sissies running around with their “bless me clubs” and there’s a war going on between good and evil. Millions of lives are being lost to greed, bureaucracy and to a church that’s been asleep. And it sends me out of my mind with anger”.
Note: We will be offering a Guys Growth Group this fall on this book ….till then go check it out.

Thoughts from Sunday…
It’s been a busy week… in the last five days I have performed a wedding, talked with a church consultant, preached, flew to MI and back, fundraised and put together a trampoline (my friends helped with that one). All and all it’s been a good but busy week. I am looking forward to things slowing down a little this week and catching my breath. Here are some highlights from the weekend…..
- I loved the Dream Team point leaders coming over to our house last night. We laughed – ate burgers and talked about becoming like John the Baptist – no we are not going to wear camels hair (at least I’m not).
- I loved how THRIVE KIDZ was on its game – heard from a 3rd grader that it was “really really fun”!
- I loved going to NY Pizza and talking with our consultant about – RIGHT / WRONG / Missing and Confusing – it could revolutionize our church.
- I loved how we ended our service – simple and gracious. Great job Jessica!
- Enjoyed seeing Glen Gerber from Westlake Prep Academy. Thanks for coming out!
- Enjoyed also seeing the team from Northwoods church in Spring TX come out- you guys are going to rock your new school this fall -we are rooting for ya!
- Excited when I think about the Money Makeovers that are beginning to happen right now. Peace and Freedom for our finances, families and faith. (Could not think of any more F words that FIT -hey got one).
- Excited that people are bringing their friends to church during the Summer- we saw a ton of new faces.
- Excited when I think about all the lives that will be changed because we listened to God and started THRIVE.
Grace and Peace

The Trust Fall
Monday Morning Thoughts
What a great day at THRIVE Church…..a few thoughts before I jump into a day of meetings and family!
* Pumped about how many people are talking about “the trust fall” from this Sunday’s message. Trusting God starts in 3 areas – our View of Him, our identity in Him and our Agenda for Him – had a ton of people say they are going to remember the visual for a long time – thanks Max for falling off a ladder in church!
* Big announcement – THE BLITZ is ON! We are inviting 10,000 people in the Katy / Richmond area to church this weekend…..three nights and over 50 people serious about helping our community – that’s our trust fall! Join us – It’s gonna be a FUN! www.thrivechurch.cc
* Can’t wait to launch our Money Makeover series this SUNDAY! -this could be the timeliest series for a church in the last 50 years. Pray for me – got to get this one RIGHT!
* Loved the quote from - AW Tozer – “ Were we to extract from any man a complete answer to that question, “What comes to your mind when you think about God?” we could predict with accuracy the spiritual future of that man” -WOW!!
* We have a new name for our “off the chart volunteers” at THRIVE – they are called the DREAM TEAM – I think its fitting.
* Can’t wait to launch the Dave Ramsey Money Makeover class at the end of our new series – I think it’s going to help a lot of people -Jackie and I are excited-we are all in.
* All I can say is….My friend Roger did our connect card moment at service this weekend …all I can say is – that guy is FUNNNNNY!
* Reading the gospel of John in my Quiet time – still blown away by the way Jesus approached people – he hated religion and loved the hurting….I want to be more like that!
* Had fun seeing Ice AGE 3 with Jorge , Marisa , Gabby and Gavin – it was funny ….ok the parts I saw of it ….I took a needed nap in the middle!
* Excited about Meeting with a Church Planting Guru Glen Smith today – he’s like the Yoda of starting churches……..and I’m……never mind!
* I’m really excited about something “special” going on in next weeks service …we have never done this before!
* Keep Praying for my family and Thrive Church – Jackie and I feel like something BIG is right around the corner!
Never Quit and Keep Trusting,
Tom
