5 Prayers for our CHURCH

prayer1

As a Pastor one of my Big Deals is Prayer….my goal is for no one to beat me in the amount of time that our church gets talked about with God. I believe what the Bible says about prayer – it can make things happen – it can help us hear God’s heart and it can provide protection from the enemy’s attacks. Here are the 5 things that I am currently PRAYING for THRIVE!

1. WE TRUST MORE! - Call it faith, trust – whatever you want…..Our relationship with God is built on believing God at his word and then acting on those beliefs. My prayer is that we TAKE HUGE LEAPS OF TRUST in the coming year. What are the focus areas: our time, families, jobs, finances and being a connector to God!

2. COMMUNITY GROWS! – We were built for more than sitting in a seat on Sunday! The church was designed to “do life” and at the same time, be “life-giving”. I’m praying Thriver’s eat together, play together, have conversations about God, life and family. The book of Proverbs describes it as “iron sharpening iron” – let’s sharpen each other!

3. PROTECTION FROM THE ENEMY! – The truth is Satan hates us! He will distract, deploy, and put despair in our lives to hold us back from God’s blessings and power. I’m praying that our eyes are wide open to the enemy’s schemes and that we grab a hold of the spiritual weapons that God has given us! Go read II Corinthians 10:4

4. EXPERIENCE AUTHENTIC JOY – When we can smile beyond our circumstances, laugh in the middle of storms and be thankful when we experience blessings…that’s when we can say “I have Joy”. Joy is not circumstantial – it’s an inward peace that comes from our confidence in who GOD IS! I’m praying that Thrive is busting out the doors with people who are discovering the real deal!

5. WE IMPACT OTHERS LIVES – The Bible describes the Gospel as “good news”. Good news deserves to be shared and given out freely. I get excited when I think about our friends, family members and neighbors connecting to Christ in 2010. We can impact other’s lives when we are willing to share our story – love people and invite them to go on the journey with us. It’s incredible to think that we can help people discover God’s Purpose and plan for their lives!

Praying hard! Pray with me!

See you Sunday…..

8 Steps to a Boring Church…

57307326

This Blog was soooo good I had to re-post it….it’s from a Perry Noble, pastor of New Spring Church in Anderson, SC. He hit the bulls eye on this one!  Enjoy -Tom

I know some people do not agree with me…but I FIRMLY believe that church should not be a boring place…because…

· The Bible is NOT boring–the teachings of God’s Word are more relevant and exciting that anything on the planet.

· Jesus was NOT boring – to see His life lived out in the Scriptures AND to see WHO HE IS should inspire AWE, not apathy!

· Our message is NOT boring – Jesus was DEAD, came BACK TO LIFE and offers us the same opportunity, to cross over from death to life and be reconciled to God–THAT’S FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

· The Book of Acts is NOT boring – there is NOWHERE in the book of Acts that ritual replaced relationship!

If the tomb is empty, Jesus is alive and HOPE is possible then HIS church should reflect that.

BUT…if you want to make sure your church is boring, here are Eight Simple Steps…

#1 – There has GOT to be apathetic leadership – Seriously, the leaders in the church MUST be obsessed with not rocking the boat and pursuing personal comfort

#2 – There CANNOT be a desire to reach people far from God! Seriously, new birth can bring excitement to a church, which is NOT what people in pursuit of boredom desire. SO…don’t focus on the Gospel…instead teach lots of history lessons and talk about things that very few people actually care about. This will keep people far from God away from your group of people, thus not messing up the chemistry in your holy huddle. WHATEVER you do…DO NOT talk about the Gospel…it changes people!!!

#3 – DO NOT call for ANY type of commitment from ANYONE–EVER! People MUST be allowed to come and go as they please…and must NEVER be made to feel uncomfortable under any type of circumstances. If people begin responding to God it will increase the excitement level, which cannot happen in a boring place.

#4 – Always be predictable. Do the same songs at the same times, pray the same prayers and make SURE that people can look at their watch at any point in the service and know exactly what’s coming next.

#5 – Make excuses when things are done poorly! WHATEVER you do…do NOT address the obvious issues that are right under your nose. In fact, if you will simply criticize any church or ministry that IS seeing success it will take the attention off of your dysfunction and allow you to maintain the current state of your church.

#6 – PLEASE make sure not to make ANY type of references to culture in your church services. If you want to have a boring church then you’ve GOT to make people believe that the lives they live Monday through Saturday and then the life they live on Sunday are two separate things. You cannot teach that Scripture speaks to culture…because if people begin making that connection then they will begin to experience what Jesus promised in John 10:10!

#7 – You’ve GOT to allow people to pretend that their lives are perfect! Seriously, if someone has a problem then you must either put them out of your church OR tell them to act as if they are perfect.

If people begin to bring their junk to your church and Jesus begins to help them work through it and they get delivered from it…your church cannot maintain its boring status.

#8 – You MUST focus on the external and NOT the internal. Make the way people dress the MOST important issue…and the way they LIVE a non- issue!!!

A Life Giving Church

life-support

Ever have a day where something “hits you out of the blue”?

Today was my day. I had 4 conversations with different people all in the market for a new Home church. Each conversation was different and unique, but there seemed to be a thread that carried through each one.

In no certain terms each person I talked with today shared with me that they are looking for a church that’s “LIFE-GIVING”.

What I re-discovered is people want to encounter God without the religious baggage that they find when they go to church.

Craig Groeschel in his Book “IT” describes the 5 things that make a church LIFE GIVING – or in his terms – churches that have “IT”. I Love these things – I’m praying for these things and excited to be apart of a church that HAS these things…….

1. Passion for God’s presence

2. A deep craving to reach the Lost

3. Spirit-filled Faith

4. Down to earth humility

5. Brokenness

“The perfect church service would be one we were almost unaware of. Our attention would have been on God.” -CS Lewis

Excited! – Tom

Read this Book…

9781578569885

Our guys group gets together every Friday morning. When we started it, we initially wanted a place for “guys to come together” and be real. Well it worked and we decided our next step was to conquer something. We thought about hunting and realized a few of our members might accidentally shoot us, so we settled on a book! With our incredible desire to take something down, we chose to take on the book “FIGHT” by Kenny Luck. WOW – This book has kicked me in the teeth and re-opened my eyes to some BIG TIME realities. I don’t want to give it all away but it talks about the REAL battle going on RIGHT NOW with evil and good. Here are a few thoughts that I hope make you order it on AMAZON right now. If you are woman reading this – buy it for your guy. It’s actually a book that guys will want to read….

  • To discern evil you must understand that Satan is a living personality with a complex depth of character.
  • Satan has an unhealthy fondness for the power of his position that turned him self-serving. God sensed it and responded in a manner consistent with his character banishing him from heaven.
  • Jesus knew that innocence to evil and sin was the secret to clarity of mind and receptivity to His Spirit in battle.
  • One of the reasons that we are getting massacred is that we are sheep among wolves, but we act like we are sheep among squirrels.
  • Bono – (in reference to the church) “today it’s a load of sissies running around with their “bless me clubs” and there’s a war going on between good and evil. Millions of lives are being lost to greed, bureaucracy and to a church that’s been asleep. And it sends me out of my mind with anger”.

Note: We will be offering a Guys Growth Group this fall on this book ….till then go check it out.

When was the last time you met an 80’s TV Icon……

gallery-3475321

I am in Atlanta GA right now, hanging out with a cool church planting guy named Joel Hunter. He is the national director church planting development for the Assembly of God. We have just been hanging out, talking church and bumping into celebrities all over the place. Today on the tram at the Atlanta airport you never would have guessed who walked right in front of us….ok – you will never guess. It was the 80’s tv show icon “Webster”. That’s right all 3ft 10 inches of himself (give or take a few). Anyone remember when he danced with Micheal Jackson on an awards show?

Well if that wasn’t enough we went out to see Frost / Nixon (great movie by the way)  and guess who we bumped into at the theatre….ok – you will never guess again. It was Raven Simone from Disney’s “That’s so Raven” show. My buddy got his picture taken with her and told her it was “for his kids”. I know for a fact it was for his Facebook page…

I still have one more full day in Atlanta. There is a good chance I will bump into someone from the original Brady Bunch crew or a random member of the New Kids on the Block. So if you ever see Webster or Raven at THRIVE Church…you know where it all began.

Pray for us – Tomorrow morning we are  are going to be meeting with a national Leadership Guru named Tim Elmore (not related ). He is apart of the Injoy leadership team with John Maxwell. Tim is an established author and implemented successful training programs in colleges all over the country. We’ve taught from his leadership material in many of our student leadership meetings over the years. I am excited to be invited into a conversation about how to effectively develop young Church planters all across our country. It should be a great day – I’ll keep you posted

Is Patience on Anyone’s Christmas List?

patience

I drive by the future location for Thrive Church at least 4 times a day.

It is on the road that leads to my house. The location is West Lake Prep Academy in Richmond, TX.  Every time I drive by  -it seems like the perfect place to launch a new, exciting, life-giving church. The only snag is….the building is not finished yet. In fact roof was just put on last week.

Lately, as I see the building I find myself having conversations with God…. they go something like this. Lord, PLEASE finish the building in time for our Feb 8 pre-launch service. Come on God -DO it!!! Now in my mind, I know God is a lot more capable of finishing a building project on schedule than I ever could. ( I struggle to hang pictures in my house – thank God for my wife.) But I find myself asking God to “hurry it up”. One of the tougher parts of faith is trusting God, and slowing down when you want to “speed it up”. To be honest with you – most of the time God extends timelines with me. Why, because he is trying to teach me. Here are some of my latest lessons…

1. Patience is God’s way of refining and developing our dreams. Baby Elmore is due May 19. I want our baby to hang out in my wifes belly for the full nine months. Just like a baby, God’s dreams have to be developed before they are birthed.

2. The inside is more important than the outside. How incredible would Thrive Church be without power.  How about toilets with no running water (ok….let’s pass on that visual). You get my point. Scriptures tell us, God is concerned more about than what’s on the inside. The inside takes time to become. I’m glad God is patient with my process. How about you?

3. Prayer makes my faith GROW.   My talks with God lately have been just what I needed. Numerous times I felt His peace and assurance as I have spilled out my fears and anxiety to Him. Increased communication – develops increased confidence. With God I find, the more you talk, the more you trust.

That’s it – See you Friday for our Second THRIVE Christmas party. Come hang out, eat, find out more about THRIVE and celebrate the season. It starts at 7:30 pm and best of all it’s free and gas is cheap. (I saw it for 1.45 a gallon today – sweet)

How about putting patience on our Christmas list this year…

What is the last Risk you have taken?

play_risk

I just spent the last two days in Atlanta with 15 guys that are about to take the biggest risk of their lives. They are answering God’s call to plant a NEW CHURCH. Most of them have given up good jobs, with decent salaries and chosen to relocate their families. They have a hand-full of people, a little money and a Big Dream from God. I have heard church planting described as an extreme sport for pastors. After talking with some of my new fellow church planters – I believe it.

Getting to know these 15 guys reminded me that God loves risk takers. Much like a huge fan at NFL game , I like to picture God as one of those guys in the bleachers standing up screaming, “GO! GO! GO!” at the top of his lungs  when we allow our self to get a little uncomfortable. I know for me when I force myself to let go of the things that prop me up, that’s when I really discover how strong God is.

To be honest with you, I am discovering Risking everything is a pretty scary and amazing place to be. Since Jackie and I chose to start Thrive Church I can start to sense my faith becoming more and more vivid. I have asked myself, “Why am I feeling this way?” I think it’s because I am discovering that risking is the essence of FAITH – the essence to LIVING FULLY ALIVE. I think Moses sensed it in the desert. Can you imagine how alive Peter felt when Jesus invited him to start walking on water?

God in His love for us will do whatever it takes to get us to that place. We were never meant to play it safe. We were meant to push the boundaries and radically move the kingdom of God forward. Could it be that was the master plan of the cross – to help us become fully alive?

I hope today you move on that Risk that you have been to to afraid to take. I hope that the things that make you smile – also make you MOVE.

Go risk it all – you might start living.

What I am Thankful for

thanksgivingSince it is Thanksgiving I thought it only appropriate to remind myself of all the good things that God has placed into my life. Each of these things make me smile, humble me and inspire me to grow.

I hope as you read my list, God reminds you of all the things that would go on yours. Happy Thanksgiving

1. An incredible wife – she is the love of my life and makes my life richer and better.

2. My daughter Molly – yesterday we were praying for THRIVE church to “get off the ground” and she started giggling non-stop. She said “daddy how can are going to lift our new church off the ground” -Needless to say -our prayer time was over and we both shared a uncontrollable laugh moment. Kids remind you of what is truly important.

3. Friends that fight for you – when you have people that stick with you through the good and bad you understand what you really mean to them. I have some amazing people that define the word friendship. I think they would take a bullet for me…maybe just a rubber bullet..OK a paintball!

4. Family -I am looking forward to going to Peoria, IL this Christmas. That’s my hometown and where all my family still lives. I am so proud of them. I wish I was able to see them more. Today I have been thinking about my sister. She is an amazing person and inspires me with her honesty and her ability to “take care” of the ones she loves. She is still teaching me lessons through her consistency Thanks sis!

5. Last but not least ……The Dreams that God has placed in our hearts. 2009 is going to be the “Year of Dreams” for the Elmore’s. We are excited about starting THRIVE CHURCH and having our SECOND CHILD. Just one dream is enough to call it a full year, but God is giving us both. When God puts a dream in our hearts it is up to us to care for it and protect it. Just like a baby He develops it – we have to make sure the environment is right to grow. I am so thankful that God has entrusted Jackie and me with the dream for THRIVE Church and baby Elmore (we don’t know what we are having yet – I’m feeling a Boy).

What are the things that you are Thankful for – the things that make you smile when you think of them? Hold on to them – protect them and remember that all good things come from above….

See you on Dec 5th or 12th for our Big Christmas Party – we are looking forward to catching up.

the best is yet to come….

It’s been two weeks…

optimism-784009

Unbelievable
It has been just over two weeks since we publicly shared the dream of THRIVE Church. One the most encouraging phrases I have heard is “I’m all in”. Every time I hear those words my heart pounds a little faster. Why? I know that it’s the beginning of something powerful. I fully believe that unbelievable things happen when people come together and move a kingdom dream forward. It has already changed the way that I shop. I find myself walking through the local Kroger and Walmart thinking to myself “these people are in for the ride of their life”. It puts a smile on my face – I hope yours too.
To all those who have told me this week that you are “ALL IN”, thanks for becoming a part of something bigger than yourself. Someday we will look back at the thousands of changed lives and remember the times we prayed and dreamed about it, while crammed into a living room (on Dec 5th) w/ a bunch of people we didn’t know and we said to God, what if…
Thanks also to those of you who do not live in our area, but are a huge part of helping us launch by your generous donations and your consistent prayers. You are just as much a part of THRIVE Church as those who are privileged enough to live in an area of the country that does not have to wear a jacket in November. Feel free to come visit, just leave your jacket at home.
